Marking a course is always one of the biggest priorities of a race director to keep everyone on the course safely following the course. Races that start at night or run through the night have to be marked differently to allow runners to see and follow along. This will help you ensure that you create a great experience for your runners and reduce the risk of injury or issues.
Below are 5 things that you can do as an RD to make the course more visible to your runners at night.
1. Use Reflective Hangers
Whenever you use hangers, use a hanger that has 3m reflective tape on it. You can attach this yourself if needed. You also want to use reflective tent rope to help reduce injuries around aid stations and start/finish lines. Both tape and the rope will allow for increased visibility for your runners.
2. Reflective Signs
Your wrong way signs and arrows should have reflective tape on them for easy to see signage. You can cut the white part of 3m tape into different shapes to make arrows.

3. Additional Signage
Usually in a night trail event you will want to increase the frequency or markings on your course route and make sure that crucial waypoints get extra attention. Crucial waypoints might include the course splitting, different distances merging, or hard turns that are easy to miss. All of these require more marking on night race courses.
